Ashland Greens
EPBL 1950-1951

Besides the various Eastern Pro League teams that populated the coal mining regions of eastern Pennsylvania, many towns had their own independent franchises. These teams would assemble a schedule of exhibition games against other independent teams, as well as against Eastern League squads, the Harlem Globetrotters, the New York Rens and whatever NBA squad had an open date in their schedule.

Such was the case of the Ashland Greens, a franchise sponsored by the local dairy. The Greens' schedule included contests against everyone from the Reading Rangers to the Boston Celtics, and attendance at the games, while not spectacular, helped balance the books.

In the 1951-52 season, the Eastern Pro League's York franchise looked for a new home, and arrangements were made for the team to move to Ashland, assume the name of the Greens, and at least finish the season.

Unfortunately, the Greens played only three games, two in front of pitiful home crowds, before relocating again. Ten days after the franchise moved TO Ashland, the Greens left Ashland and became the Hazleton Mountaineers.

In 1958, Ashland became the new home of another team, as the Reading Keys relocated to Ashland High School for one game. That game, a loss in front of 100 people, was the last Eastern League contest ever played in Ashland.
