The Atlanta franchise was originally known as the Charlotte (N.C.) Krunk of the ABA during the 2005-06 basketball season, but shut down midway through its maiden campaign. The Krunk ownership decided to relocate the franchise to Atlanta for the 2006-07 season. With its home games scheduled for Morris Brown College, the team rebranded itself the "Atlanta Krunk Wolverines," to honor the name of Morris Brown's college hoops squad.
However, the Krunk was not ready for the 06-07 campaign, and chose instead to sit out the year.
When the team returned for the 07-08 season, they had dropped the "Wolverines" from their name, and picked up sponsorship from Stephon Marbury's "Starbury" shoe line (as well as playing time from Zeck Marbury, Stephon's younger brother). The season started out strong for the Krunk, as they won their first few games.
However, as the season progressed, visiting teams complained of the deplorable conditions at Morris Brown College. During a rare cold snap in Atlanta, the building's internal temperature dropped to 38 degrees, and with no working boiler, the Krunk had to forfeit one of the two games that would have been played that week.
By the end of January, head coach Kenny Anderson quit the team, as did several of his players. The Krunk continued on, though, playing road games with a five-man skeleton team.
