Binghamton Triplets
EPBL 1946-1947

Binghamton was one of six franchises in the newly formed Eastern Professional Basketball League, along with Reading, Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton, Allentown and Lancaster. They lost their first game, an exhibition contest against Syracuse, and then proceeded to blow their first two games, both against the Wilkes-Barre Barons.

This of course caused the owner of the team to fire EVERY PLAYER from the team. Just two games into the season, and the owner replaced the entire squad with eight men who were part of the independent Bronx Indians squad. That lineup included:

Pete Savio, G, St. John's
George Sibby, C, Seton Hall, 6-5
Mel Haskell, G, LIU, 6-3
Joe Bellus, G, 6-1
Tom Larkin, F, St. John's, 6-3
Marvin Flickinfield, F, 6-2
Lou Lubin, Brooklyn College, 5-9
Dan Murphy, F, Manhattan, 5-9

The Triplets won their next contest against the Hazleton Mountaineers 77-47, as Dan Murphy asserted himself as a top scorer with 30 points. Sadly, that was an interruption to Binghamton losing their next three games, including two to Reading and a rematch at Hazleton. And attendance was pitiful - Binghamton drew approximately 1000 fans to their games at Kalurah Temple - that was 1000 fans for three total games. Their final home contest, a 62-54 loss to Reading, was played before 350 paying customers.

On December 22, 1946, the Triplets owner sold the team back to the league, who sold it to a man in Pottsville, where the team moved to finish their season. Binghamton would not return to the league for another 20 years, when the Flyers played in the Triple Cities from 1967 to 1970.
