After two years in New Haven, the Elms relocated to the harbor city of Bridgeport, Conn. But when the franchise struggled right out of the gate, the crowds were worse than anything the team had experienced back in New Haven.
At the time, the Bridgeport Flyers had one of the EPBL's scoring legends, Stacey Arceneaux, on their roster, as well as player-coach Wayne Lawrence, a former Boston Celtics draft pick. But one by one, the Eastern League teams pounded on Bridgeport. Sunbury took a win. Wilmington took a win. Even Asbury Park, the franchise with only two victories in the 1966-67 season, snagged an early victory from the hapless Flyers. Only a 112-108 victory over their in-state rivals, the Hartford Capitols, kept the Flyers from suffering through a winless season.
By December 1967, the franchise was in a shambles. Team owner Barney Cable sold off two of his top stars, Wayne Lawrence and Frank Keitt, to Hartford; and more players were offered to other teams at rock-bottom prices. After a 1-11 record, the franchise itself moved, finishing out the season in Binghamton, N.Y.
