The Mexico Aztecs brought the CBA into North America's second-largest city, as well as its largest population base ever. With their home games at Mexico City's Sports Palace (Palacio de los Deportes), the site where the United States basketall team won gold in the 1968 Olympics, the Aztecs looked to bring professional basketball to the Hispanic market. After spending its two previous seasons as the Fargo-Moorhead Fever, the Aztecs looked for a brand new start in a brand new country.
Under head coach Mack Calvin, the Aztecs won their first home game, a 90-88 (5-2) victory over the Chicago Rockers, in front of 8,295 at the Palacio de los Deportes. The team struggled with hot and cold streaks, but did produce at least two NBA call-ups - Steve Henson in early November, and Greg Grant near the end of the season. Crowd support was tremendous for the Aztecs, with several announced crowds of 9,000 or better - including the Aztecs' final home game of the season, a 124-109 (6-1) victory over the Omaha Racers in front of 12,587 fans; a single-game attendance record that still stands to this day.
Although the team drew well in its first season in Mexico City, team owner Doug Logan found a better opportunity for his team in San Diego, and moved the Aztecs back to America for the 1995-96 season.
